First of all, an interesting mathematical tidbit that, while obvious, is fun for the stoner-philosopher lurking inside my head:

Which numbers are knowable, and which ones aren't? To answer this question, we'll consider the set of all ascii strings. This is certainly a countable set. Now let's throw away the ones that are not valid english. Now let's throw away the ones that don't describe numbers (keeping things like "The circumference of a circle divided by its radius", "the solution to 5=x^(2/3)", and "1729", but not things like "I am hungry"). What we are left with is a subset of a countable set. And, if you buy into the strong form of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, these are all the numbers that can ever be thought about in the mind of an english speaker. But, at the very least, it is a countable set, and it is all of the numbers that can ever be described in English. The rest of the real numbers are the ones that god hides from us.

Now, with that out of the way, I can proceed to say that I had a great time skiing this weekend (downhill), but am now really sore. Also, cross country skiing and snowboarding have made downhill skiing pretty freaking easy. I hadn't downhill skied since 1993(!) but I only fell once, and that was landing a jump in the terrain park.

Also, I have been revising my DRP (Directed Research Project - UofO quals substitute - the graph theory thingie), and have come to the conclusion that it is irredeemable shit. Not that topic or the conclusions (thankfully), just my writing. Even if I am an okay presenter, I am a bad writer. [livejournal.com profile] msmithma, you know my pain. So I have spent a good chunk of today staring at the screen trying to think my way to fixing it, and have decided to start from scratch. I'm trying to write an outline right now, and with that done I will go to [livejournal.com profile] theshytiger and James' house and watch the Simpsons. After that, I will drink just enough to kill my internal editor (who we have already established is useless anyway) and proceed to pound out as many pages of paper as my mind will let me. Then I will edit those pages tomorrow and hopefully arrive at a good thing, rather than, as I previously mentioned, irredeemable shit.

Hooray for the Simpsons and booze!
